Governance

In general terms good governance is about the processes for making and implementing decisions. It is not about always making ‘correct’ decisions, but about the best possible process for making those decisions. Good governance is accountable, responsive and follows the rule of law. Guidance is given from Yorkshire Local Councils Association (YLCA), and we use the relevant model documents and templates provided by the National Association of Local Councils (NALC) to make sure we are compliant.

The legislation is mostly set out in 2 key governing documents: Standing Orders, and Financial Regulations, both updated regularly by NALC and YLCA in accordance with the Local Government Act 1972 :https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1972/70/contents.

YLCA is responsive to our questions on protocol and keeps us well-informed and guided through regular bulletins, updates and councillor/clerk training.

Policies

In addition to the Standing Orders and Financial Regulations, we have adopted policies and procedures to guide us – and make sure we are all singing from the same song sheet!
